These are the songs that work every time. No matter how many times I've played them, something always happens. There are times when I wish I didn't think this old music was so wonderful, but pretty much everybody, young and hold agrees, when they hear it that this is some of the greatest music that was ever made.
This playlist is compiled of various tracks that have inspired me over the years. I grew up listening to Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin (I used to make up very embarrassing dance routines on my own as an 8 year old in my living room to Leave My Woman Alone). One Christmas, I learnt and sang River by Joni Mitchell on repeat until my dad had to have a word with me. Gorilla by Little Simz is my 2023-so-far anthem. Piece Of Me by Lady Wray is the tune I wish I’d written. It’s full of songs that are close to my heart and I’m so happy I get to share them with you.
This playlist showcases all of my favourite musical genres from Disco, Funk, Jazz, R&B to Reggae. Primarily focusing on or inspired by the 70’s. A period of time that I believe to be the greatest era of musical history. I feel like all of these songs would sound amazing coming out of this vintage amp and be authentic to the soundscape of the time. I’ve thrown in a few songs that I heard around the house growing up; Googoosh being my Mum’s favourite artist, and Dolly Parton being my dad’s. As a kid I learnt how to play Donny Hathaway’s version of John Lennon’s ‘Jealous Guy’ on the piano; I remember playing it when I must have been 7 or 8, and making my dad cry. This playlist also represents different parts of my own musical journey, family hood and songs that have influenced me along the way.
Soul music has always been an integral part of my life. It always brings great nostalgia to my years being looked after by my grandparents growing up and how they would play vinyls and we dance around the kitchen for hours. Years later I have incorporated that into my own sound, musicianship and feel constantly inspired by the richness & beauty of music from this era.
As NAD Electronics’ Product Manager, Cas has compiled a playlist consisting of some audiophile favourites along with some of his personal selections.
