User Review: C 165BEE Stereo Preamplifier, C 275BEE Stereo Power Amplifier - A disappointment for the price

Products: C 165BEE Stereo Preamplifier, C 275BEE Stereo Power Amplifier

I first purchased the C165BEE preamp to replace a Carver C-5 preamp I bought new about 20 years ago that finally broke down. I ran the new NAD preamp through my old Carver TFM-15 power amp for awhile, and was fairly happy with the results. Ultimately I wanted another power amp for another set of speakers, and also wanted to complete my system upgrade, so decided to buy the C275BEE to use with the C165BEE. It's a nice sounding amp, but it was a bit of a disappointment for the price. After a lot of comparison listening with my old Carver (which is worth no more than about $200), I've concluded the Carver is a more dynamic sounding amp. The difference is subtle, but the NAD makes me feel slightly more aware that I am listening to recorded music coming from a pair speakers, rather than live instruments. Given that the cost of the NAD is 6 times what it would cost to buy another Carver TFM-15, it was a bit of a disappointment. I bought the amp without being able to hear it first, and that was probably a mistake. Wish I could give it a better review. Maybe others will have a better experience.
